Southern Maryland is a rich natural location with loads to do. Along with its scenic natural environments, you can visit historical and cultural sites in the state and enjoy a thriving food and entertainment scene.

What to Do in Southern MD Counties

Southern Maryland has three counties, each with a unique culture. Whether you want to relax and enjoy the outdoors or want an itinerary of exciting activities to discover each county, there’s something for everyone. These are some of the top things to do if you live in the state or want to visit:

Charles County

Charles County is a gem for historic, cultural and natural scenery. Places to visit include the county's:

  • Historical sites: One of the longest-standing counties in Maryland, Charles County is full of heritage. Kayak near the remains of over a hundred World War 1 steamships at the Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary, or visit the Port Tobacco One-Room Schoolhouse.

  • Cultural centers: For memorable cultural events, check out the College of Southern Maryland and Charles County Arts Alliance. Spend a night at the theater watching shows by the Port Tobacco Players or Black Box Theater.

  • Parks and recreational spaces: Outdoor spaces in Charles County include dog parks, skate parks, water activity spaces, hiking and cycling trails and The Field of Dreams, a special rubberized baseball field.

  • Food spots: Popular for its from-the-water seafood and waterside restaurants, this county has a rich seafood-inspired food culture. Enjoy food inspired by Greek, Italian, Asian, Mediterranean and other cuisines, as well as uniquely American plates. Explore your inner foodie with food trucks, bakeries, coffee shops, dessert stores and more. Port Tobacco Marina & Restaurant has a full menu, tiki bar and live music experiences for quality waterfront dining and fresh seafood.

  • Water activity areas: Stunning aquatic landscapes in Charles County should definitely be on your list of places to visit. Delight in relaxing water sports like fishing, swimming and boating along the Port Tobacco River. In the summer, you can also rent a boat or Jet Ski from us for thrilling water sports on the marina.
